Why do I want to become a JKD Unlimited instructor? by R.N
Why do I want to be a JKD Unlimited Instructor by Richard Neal?
I want to be an instructor because I truly enjoy the martial arts and also enjoy interacting with students of all experience and skill levels. My reason for wanting to become an instructor in this particular system, however is multifaceted.
First I believe in the precepts of JKD Unlimited. Training with realistic tactics and resistance to simulate street situations is where my journey in the martial arts has taken me and JKD Unlimited and I seem to be a good match. Service as an instructor can only make my experience better and more fruitful as the responsibility to relay the information to others will help me improve my skills and my understanding of combative arts.
Secondly, I enjoy teaching. Be it in my primary career field or within a martial arts class, I enjoy the interaction between the student and the instructor feel that there are not many positions that can have a more dramatic effect on someone’ s life than that of teacher. I feel that I have a lot to offer and, like most “gifts”, this knowledge is not as sweet unless it is shared with others. Perhaps the most pertinent reason to my desire to become a JKD Unlimited instructor, however, has not come from what the current instructors have passed on to me formally, but has more to do with what the entire school has passed on informally.
From my first class, I’ve detected a sense of “family” within JKD Unlimited and it is due in large part to your instructors. Being an instructor in another system, I know that you can’t fake it and it doesn’t come overnight. Part of being a productive part of any family is contributing to the hive and not merely becoming a drone. I really want to give back to the school and to the people who have helped (and will continue to help) me in my training.
Finally, and maybe most obviously, I want to improve as an instructor…regardless of the style. The challenge of attaining and maintaining instructor status in such a strong organization will keep me from resting on my laurels; or inform me when complacency starts to creep in. It has been a long-standing desire of mine to open a school of my own once I retire from public service. I see this instructorship as an important step towards that goal. Thank you for the opportunity.
