GUNFIGHT TRAINING

I spent five hours shooting today here in South Africa. Morne arranged the training with one of the top instructors in the country. The instructor (Dean) is truly remarkable. We are talking about a guy with lots of real experience in gunfighting, rather than just target practice. This
guy has been shot on two different occasions, has been stabbed, and has a bigbite wound on his arm. He is the real deal, and a tremendous coach. His approach is the most street-oriented I have ever seen, relying on basics, but with a considerable twist due to all of his real life experience and the experience of many of his fellow policemen. He has also been through many courses in the U.S. I want to try to get this instructor to the states for seminars. He would be a huge benefit to people interested in real life combat shooting.
I wish you were all here with us today. We shot 9 mm pistol, an assault rifle (LM5), 12 guage shot gun, and a modified MP 5 in semi-auto, three shot burst, and full auto modes. (Also shot a semi-auto shotgun with a rotating barrel that holds 12 rounds, but it is not a reliable weapon.) Great fun today. Dean brought over a thousand rounds for us to use, and we went through most of it. The police here are in shoot outs every day, so just as we rely on experience for our martial arts training, we should rely on the advice of the experienced "experts" for the firearms training. Aloha!

It sounds like Dean needs to take a Hawaii vacation ASAP.
I know a lot of people who are involved in tactical firearms training who would be very interested in training with him.

These guys down here have so much experience in gun fights that they pass on all the details that are so important. I have lots of stories to pass along when I get back. Make sure to remind me to relay the Surefire flashlight story. Amazing.
I have contacted a source on the mainland already who is hooked up with Gunsight. I would love to get Dean to the islands as well.

Firearms and tactical lights are so important to train with and most people over look them. I have a saying that I teach my students, "You can't defend against a weapon if your not trained to use the weapon, because you don't know what the weapon can or can't do." The best defense you will ever learn comes when you learn the limitations of the weapon.
This is a great thread.

Aloha Burton,
It is good to hear that you’re getting some great training in South Africa! There is a firearms academy named “Insights” in the town that I moved to. I’ve never been to any of their courses, but I’ve read a lot of positive reviews about them. They could be a prospective host for a portion of Dean’s US seminar tour, but I’m not sure on their policies and procedures (i.e. if they host guest instructors or if only their faculty teach courses.) Their website is
www.insightstraining.com
Take care,

Thanks Kavan,
I will look into that. We are also going to look into Gunsight and Black Water, two of the top facilities in the country.
Getgoin mentioned tactical lights. Very important and easy to carry and employ. A surefire flashlight will blind an attacker in a second, making everything else much easier.
If anyone else has any leads for Dean, please let me know. Aloha!
