I think sometimes some martial artists are aware that reality doesn't look the way they think it "should". So they alter sparring to make "reality" resemble their ideal. Basicly "fixing" the experiment to get the results they want...

Yeah I agree...a LOT of Martial Artists out there are delusional!

I had a brief conversation with Ozzy this morning. We were working on the rear naked choke prevention/escape. We moved up to moderate resistance with headgear and he caught me in a guillotine and I tapped. After training I told him when I first started learning BJJ I was always so pissed off because I felt like every minute I was being tapped out. So it kind of broke down my ego and also made me want to get better. Now when I get tapped, even though that feeling always stinks, it also keeps me humble. I said thank you to Ozzy and to anyone else who makes me tap, because it makes me that much better next time. Keeps me honest.

As for anyone who disses this program,
they need to step outside there box they've created for themselves and get tapped a few times
to remember what it means to be a Martial Artist.

Oh yeah, he also mentioned free speech...last time I checked he lives in UK and we live in USA...doesn't that mean the first amendment doesn't apply to him? haha

I've been involved in martial arts since I was 12 years old and it is so full of weirdos, I can't even tell you.

It should be about self improvement and expression, and protecting yourself and your loved ones.  But too often ends up with people trying to be tough guys or obsessed with getting people to "follow" them.

You'd think the delusions would have ended with the advent of mixed martial arts fighting.  The popularity of it now is incredible, and people who would never have entered a martial arts school before are more aware of what actually happens in an altercation.   Yet, people like that still cling to their delusions.

You could say "well, whatever they want to do is fine, as long as it doesn't affect me", but I think it'd be terrible if his students were seriously injured (or worse) if they tried to defend themselves.

As for the sparring in the tests, any body that has sparred realistically knows that those were good rounds.

The test, in my opinion, is a good marking point, but its really all of the consistent training beforehand, and the person's performance in sparring over the years that matters.  The instructor knows when he asks his student to test, that the student is ready to be at that level.  You'd have to have a pretty major breakdown to not pass.

It's good to experience the testing though, and to have that anxiety, and the willingness to perform well.  It makes you a better person.

Shelt, what was the "self regulation"?

I remember that testing day, all three of us were nervous and had to remember to relax because we had 7 rounds. HA!

Laughing Yes! I remember those!

I finally got a chance to watch that (incredibly long) video.  I can't say anything that hasn't been already said.....

Though I do remember when Walker got into it with that guy.  The post where he corrected all of his grammatical errors was hilarious.

I started my Martial arts back in the seventies, just looking at that clip makes me laugh because some martial artist's don't know how it feels to be hit bare handed. I was trained getting hit in the face and the body by kicks and bare knuckles like Jarlo say there are weirdos out there in the martial art world.
