Thanks for posting, Michael.
Let us count Mr. Brody's mistakes, shall we...
#1: "Brody went outside to “defuse the situation” and asked the men to leave." The best thing to do would have been to call the police and only engage the antagonists if they'd entered the premises or damaged property outside the building.
#2: "Brody placed Masterson in a choke hold until he passed out, then repeatedly punched the unconscious Masterson in the face, the affidavit stated." Once you've choked a guy out, he is no longer a threat. He should be placed in the recovery position (possibly with his hands restrained) and the police should have been called immediately. Striking an unconscious opponent is not self-defense; it is revenge.
#3: "Brody, meanwhile, grabbed Masterson by the ankles and dragged him into the woods, the affidavit stated. Masterson was unconscious, but still breathing." Again, Brody should have called the cops, not disposed of the body. This sounds, at best, like negligent homicide, and at worst, like murder.
#4: "But no one called police or 911. Everyone from the cabins, in fact, later left the island." Ditto: negligent homicide or murder.
I hate the fact that @$$holes like this give a bad name to both people who train MMA and the rear naked choke as a merciful submission. It sounds like Brody pounded this guy to a pulp in a blind rage and then did nothing whatsoever to show compassion for his opponent or even contact the proper authorities.
