on the following webside you can download the modern army combatives as well as the marine martial arts program.
i think it is interesting to compare both.  imho  the mac seems to be more complete. i think it gives anyone a solid and practical base for street self defense (battlefield in case of soldiers)
hope guys you enjoy the reading

Thanks for the link.  I'm a big fan of Greg Thompson's book, H2H, which covers Modern Army Combatives Levels 1 and 2, along with some more advanced grappling and striking techniques:http://www.amazon.com/H2H-Hand-Combat-Modern-Combatives/dp/1931229430/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317739622&sr=8-1

I found it interesting that the Marine Corps Martial Arts Manual still has some pretty antiquated material in it (not to mention the terrible drawings).

your welcome james.  for many times i always asked questions here on the forum, and everyone has always been friendly to help me and give me some advice.  i hope many of you can enjoy of the download.
i have the h2h book also at my home; i like it also.  maybe the only negative point, is that it covers no striking techniques from each position on the ground and the clinch. for the rest , it is a solid base.

Which techniques are those Jim?
I've seen the McMaps material and multiple classes done from none to tan belt. It looked fairly well rounded and many techniques are used in mma as well. There are a few escapes that I thought were iffy and low percentage as well, but in general it seemed to be a huge improvement imo over the older material.

Here are a few that raised an eyebrow (using the pagination scheme in the manual):
3-13: double vertical forearm block vs. a stick strike
3-14: turning your back on an opponent to get the figure-4 stick disarm
3-15: bent arm lever stick disarm (aka, shiho nage)
4-13 and 4-14: the "parry and stick" boxing defenses
  5-2: the turning throw
6-6: counter to a rear choke
7-4 through 7-5: counter to the mount (followed by overwrap arm bar)
  8-1 though 8-9: wrist locking
  8-13: restraining technique

Everything else looked pretty good (though I may have left something out of the above list).

Thanks for the link. It is a big improvement over some of the recent training, but still has a long way to go to be battlefield specific. They need to actually test everything to be sure it works!
