Hey Guys,

I want to buy mats for my home, that I can either use on the porch (nice day) or inside the house. I think I want to get about a 10x10 space. Seems like that should be enough to train with one other person. Also I need them to be either fold up or roll up something I can easily store.

Any ideas on low cost options. I've seen a few mats but it always ends up being around $500 plus shipping.

Thanks a ton,

Paul

I got my garage grid mats at Toys R Us and they came in packs 4 ( 2 foot by 2 foot )  for $20 bucks, the draw back was that they were 3/4 inch thick.   At the time price and mobility of the garage mats were important and the system Has never disappointed, it is what it is, you cant do full power take downs on them but they are a good training surface if your careful.   I recently saw a real similar product in the same price range at a dicks sporting goods, good luck.

I any kind of mat that you want that is going to roll up or fold for that area, you are pretty much looking at about 500 bucks and thats not a bad price. I recommend a good 10 x 10 wrestling mat. You can sometimes find them on craigslist. They're only draw back is weight and storage isnt that great.

Look at the $500 as an investment that will last a long time. Having a good mat for training will only aid in your MA training.

If you're INCONUS I've seen mmahq sometimes have Dollamur style mats for sale at $200 with $5 shipping.

I'll be using the mat mostly for the grappling with some takedowns... is 1.25 thick enough or should I pay extra to go with 2 inch think matting?

Are these mats to be permanently placed?  Just curious, there was a video somewhere in this forum from the Gracies on how they made their mats.

Here it is, its kind of long but it might give you some good ideas.

Swain Dollamur rollup mats are the best thing out there.  They aren't dirt cheap, but you can afford them if you save your pennies or find a special on ebay, which they have fairly often.  I spent about $650 for four 5x10' mats in my garage, which is currently my primary training facility, they have paid for themselves MANY times over in the past few years.

I order 1 of the 5x10 roll up Zebra Mats. I'll post a short video review when I get it.
