Hi everyone,

Sorry but I have been meaning to post this for a few weeks now. I have become certified under strength and conditioning expert coach Kevin Kearns, MMA conditioning level 1 & 2

www.burnwithkearns.com

I only had to go to Dublin Ireland, which is two and a half hours from me.

Here is what Kevin called a "Human Interest Story" He asked me to write it for him;

For Kevin Kearns A Human interest story;

 Kevin Kearns asked me to do a "human interest" story. I was unsure of what exactly that entailed or why this needed to be written. However on reflection, I decided that Kevin was right and this was a story that needed to be told. I have been involved with the martial arts for many years and have seen many changes, but nothing could prepare me for martial arts biggest evolutionary leap...The UFC! The Ultimate Fighting Championship caused the biggest spark, arguable since Sifu Bruce Lee's impact on the martial world. Little did I know however that not only did it change my direction with regards to what style I practise, but would ultimately lead me to meet someone who would not only have tremendous impact on how I conducted my fitness workouts, but as a friend whom I value and trust. As I watched the UFC, one fighter stood out for me with his attitude and tremendous physical conditioning. This was Kenny Florian, who seemed to me to have the respect and honour, that is sadly missing amongst many UFC fighters of the present era. So this got me thinking. How did Florian get in such tremendous condition? How did he have such a great engine, still able to compete in the later rounds at such a high intensity? I knew that I had to find out! I logged onto his site and onto the training section and there it was. Burn with Kearns, "more fitness, less time, better results" How wouldn't want some of that in this time restricted modern world. I quickly ordered his dvd, "thirty minute core strength workout" dvd and I was impressed. but not as impressed as I was to within a few short weeks. I emailed Kevin several times, after his release of the "Basement tape series for MMA conditioning" to clarify several questions that I had about the series. Then it happened. I was at work and the phone rang and I hear that Boston accent that is so famous, "Can I speak to Keith Foster please?" said the voice on the other end of the phone "Speaking", I replied. "This is Kevin Kearns" I could hardly speak. I was stunned, surprised and very excited. This guy is famous all over the world and he has taken the time to ring me? "I believe you have some questions", he continued, " I'm more of a phone guy"

This is how it started and this is how we first connected, from Ireland to the United States. This developed into a friendship and I owe so much to Kevin's kindness and generosity. My life has changed for the better and I have new goals and aspirations, thanks to him, but more about that later. I will never forget these works, "by the time 2011 is done, me and you will be standing shoulder to shoulder" I have to say I believed him. One thing that stands out about Americans is their can do attitude and determination to make something happen, regardless of the obstacles placed in front of them. Of course he made it happen and in October of 2011, Kevin Kearns and I where indeed standing shoulder. Kevin made it to Ireland and conducted a MMA conditioning certification weekend. I was thrilled and the course was simply awesome and inspiring!

Never underestimate the value of reaching out to someone, no matter how far away they live. You just never know what may happen, or the impact that you may have on their lives and they on you. Thank-you Kevin Kearns for all that you have done for me!

A short review of the Kevin Kearns Certification week-end;

I have to say that after all this time I was excited and nervous about finally meeting Kevin Kean's. I've got to know him a little through telephone calls and Skype, which my son Brandon loves to sit in on and thanks to my friend Ryan wonders if the person on the other line is trapped inside the computer. The day didn't start well, as my lift to Dublin's cars breaks decided to fail on Saturday morning. So we had to drive through Belfast to John's house and transfer everything to his Jeep and then finally, we where on our way. We arrived a little later than I had anticipated and much later than I had told Kevin, so I was a little stressed. The was some comedy value at the end of the journey where Ken's old sign (where the old gym was situated) caused us some initial confusion.

I immediately apologised to Kevin, who made me feel at ease and said, "Don't stress your here now" I met his friend Scott, who is such a warm and friendly person and then it was time for the introduction and formalities. The music kicked off with my favourite Drop Kick Murphy's song and we where on our way with warm-up phase one, "movement prep" I love this warm-up and it was great to have Kevin do it for the class and turn it up a notch. This warm-up is a moving one, therefore raises the temperature gradually as a warm-up should. Warm-up phase two, "core killer" should be the foundation of any body's training as it addresses the entire core. Kevin explained to the participation's what the core was and before I met Kevin I thought it was just the abdominal region. Ladder drills. I find these drills to be a lot of fun and very stimulating, but as always Kevin has a way of turning things up a beat. Throughout this seminar I can honestly say that I have never sweated so much in my entire athletic carear and off I went to change my tee shirt. One of the many aspects of the week-end was Kevin's encouragement of team involvement and we high fived each other after each drill. As this was a certification week-end and not just a seminar, we all got to teach a technique in front of the class, was was really nerve wrecking for someone like me who is not used to this. Still this was a worthwhile exercise and I got to see all different strategies on how to present a technique and as Bruce Lee used to say, "Absorb what is useful"

Kevin shouts, "We like it we love it", and we respond with, "We want more of it" Even though my body was screaming, "dude your almost forty now, stop this" I wanted more! Kevin's enthusiasm for the fitness industry is infectious. His expert tuition and friendly demeanour makes the week-end one that I will never forget. Day two and once more the sweat was flying as we flew through some ladder drills. On occasion Kevin gave us some great lectures, not just on fitness but to motivate, encourage and that great all American, " I can do" attitude. I was impressed that he remembered some of our conversations and somewhat embarrassed that I got a lot of the credit for bringing him to Ireland. One of the highlights (which there where many) was the "Gas in the tank" circuit training. I believe it was sixteen continues circuits of pure Kearns genius. One of the many things that i love about Kevin's system is the sport specific movements, that mimic the movements of MMA/BJJ and buil a strong core at the same time. This was truly awesome and I loved throwing knees, with my partner holding the superband offering me encouragement. I learnrd that MMA is also a team sport and also family which is what Kevin said, "You are now part of the Kevin Kearns family and if you need any questions, just let me know" He means it to!

In conclusion this was a fantastic week-end! A week-end of making new friends, learning and getting my ass burned by the burn master Kevin Kearns. After we had completed the test at the end and Kevin reviewed our answers we each received our certificated, which I am very proud of!

If I can say one more thing to Kevin, "WE LIKE IT WE LOVE IT, WE WANT MORE OF YOU!"

 Burton! I would highly recomend that you bring Kevin Kearns to Hawaii. You guys would get on great!!

Thank you Keith,
  Sounds great. I will see if we can arrange something in the MMA community to bring Kevin out.
