How do you counter punch off a block?

There seems to be two schools of thought on how to counter punch after blocking a hook. For instance, (matching leads) against the opponents rear hook or overhand, you would lead arm block the punch and slightly roll with it, then come back with your own rear arm punch. The other method would be to block the punch, then come back with a lead arm counter punch.
So my question is, what do you guys typically train. Right now I usually train the first method against head shots and the second method against body shots. For me the first method seems more natural for the head shot especially if I am blocking my opponents cross. The second method is supposed to be better since you can follow your oppents arm back in thus providing you with a better opening. What I dont like about the second method is that, for head shots, to block in mma or the street, you have to raise your arms higher than you do in boxing since you dont have the big padded glove to use to help cover your head and absorb the shock. Raising your hand higher for the block seems to cause my counter punch to a lot less powerful.
Any thoughts?

Looks like Bas does exactly what I do, opposite arm counter the head shots, same arm counter the body hooks. Thanks for the video

My method is
direct
block the incoming hit, hit with that hand that blocked beating his recovery
^ this would be considered in the half beat 1-.5 beat
indirect
anticipate to block and roll the incoming hit, then use the momentum to hit with the other side of my body
^ this is 1-1 beat
They are useful at different times.
