When at a Nazi concentration camp a few years ago, a survivor wrote these words that I think of often: "The veneer of civilization is very thin."

This is a good example. We live in a civilized society, but all around us are those who are ready to step over the line.
Train well.

KO King used to be a 'game' people I know would do. They'd often attempt to target 'white marines' on or near the Waikiki 'strip'. The game in it's essence would be to find a target and attempt to dispatch them with "1" cheap shot. hence the name KO King.
Pretty despicable and disturbing imo.
With the increase in Police in the Waikiki area and the reduction in 'Cruising Waikiki' this has been reduced to nill. I do think the recent Agent shooting in Waikiki had a similar story...though that is just my own theory.

ie - similar to the JKDU Waianae drill.

my goodness this is a plague. there are some reported attacks here also in my province here in Philippines. I have a student/train partner who works in hospital and told me a lot of random attacks happening at night. One guy is just waiting for a jeepney and 3 guys approach the guy and just launch a punch and run and other same version of attacks. bad bad bad

Crucial mistake:

"I don't remember much of what happened," Quain said. "I was hanging out with a friend, celebrating the Cardinals in the World Series. I went to the store and saw a group of kids who looked out of place, suspicious, but I shrugged it off. I got around to the library, and the next thing I remember is waking up on the corner with the mayor standing next to me. I tried to say `hi' but my jaw was broken."

Grew up in the St. Louis / IL area.  Lived in IL but played in a band and we would play and go to shows in some "seedy" parts where the Punk Rock clubs were. Always had to trust the "spidey senses" due to people seeming out of place and from Skinheads hanging around. Some were cool but some were NOT.

Regardless of the area, sounds like his "senses" were dulled possibly by alcohol.

Good point Robert. Terrible it happened to him, but he had plenty of warning signs.
