hello guys
this time no self defense debate, but i would like to hear your comments and advises regarding my problem.  since a few mounths now i have an herniatic disk in the region l5s1.  thank's god at the moment i didn't need a surgery.  i started since monday a six mounth revalidation program to build up back muscles to reduce the pain.  my doctor and kinesist told me that training in martial arts will probably be over for me, especially because i train with resistence.
the only thing that i could do is training  in english boxing.
i would like to hear if some of you have also the same problem as i do ?  do you still train or did you quit ?
i would really appriciate your comments and adivises, because i am only 36 and stop my training makes me feel sad.
before my injury i trained muay thai, bjj and mma.
thanks in advance for your help

Hi Amando,
I am sorry to hear about your back problem.

I am not a doctor and this isn't medical advice, but I know lots of people, including myself, who have had problems with bulging discs. For me, it was from playing a lot of guard, then not stretching in the opposite direction afterwards to ensure balance. (Doing cobra stretches).

I have been fine through being sure that I balance the direction of the pressure on the spine. I also am sure to massage the area around the lumbar/sacrum by laying on a hard lacrosse ball nearly every night.
Tuhon Inosanto had a terrible problem with his back years ago. Now, it is all strengthened through yoga and BJJ. He trains like a madman at 75 years of age.
Get your therapy, strengthen that up, and I am sure that you can get back to training.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I just came off a year of little or no training due to injuries.

You have to focus on healing first. That is your training for now, to just heal. And it may take more than a year.

Yoga and Pilates may help you out; just tell the teachers to be aware of your problems. Certainly continue to do what you are currently doing (revalidating program). And, remember, doctors have been wrong before.

You might also consider training later with a personal trainer who specializes in sports injuries.

You may remember that Bruce Lee injured his back and was bedridden for months, but he kept up his reading, and training his mind, and came out stronger than before.

You are 36. I am 49. You can make it. I thought I was finished, but I slowed down and took it easy, and simply tried to build up my strength.

Let us know how the healing is going.

Good luck!

Just be careful and pay attention to your body.

Mine is falling apart.
I have a bad shoulder, wrist, right hand and a torn back muscle that flares up badly a few times a year.
I've had to REALLY cut back what I can do in training and it is a bummer.

Sorry to hear that amando! Hope you get well sooner! Have faith my friend!

I'm lucky to be part of JKDUnlimited Family! I never knew unless Guro Burton posted that too much guard may cause such problem and Cobra Stretching?? do helps! What is Cobra Stretching? Is it hte same with Hindu or Indian or Cat Back Stretching?

I pray for your quick recovery amando!
