Hello guys gals and other sentient lifeforms:

I am relaunching my training group this summer and I have an idea.  If anyone is near Anderson, IN would you be interested in getting together and having a BBQ and some training.

I don't really want to have a seminar, but a gathering and everyone bring 5 bucks (to cover the food) and your equipment.  We would roll in the grass, share techniques, and maybe do some paint ball.

If this sounds like fun and you would be interested drop me a line and your contact info.  I live in Anderson IN and JKD people north of Indianapolis might consider doing this.  Also it may be a nice way to realaunch my group/school.

My school is downgrading to a Performance Group (not a bad thing, I just don't teach certain things anymore) and when later when the new curriculum comes out from Burton I will upgrade again as an instructor.

If you love functional street oriented martial arts training and want to network, get ahold of me.

Hi Johnny!
Thanks for the great idea and the invitation.  That sounds like fun!  We will have to take some Kahuku sweet corn out to you!  (I can't decide on whether to hit "yes" or "absolutely"!  Aloha!

Well I'm hoping a few Midwest people make contact with me.  I know a lot of people peruse this forum.

I got some contact all over Indiana and I plan on invited them out.

Anyway Burton, if you make a solid date for states please let me know.  I may be able to support your trip.  I would love to host you here and have an outdoor seminar if the weather permits.  Kind of like Wind and Rock.

I guess I need to call you since I started the perfermance program.  I get a phone call and super decoder ring or something.  I should take advantage of that.

Call me if you like....

If I brought you out I bet a lot people would come to my picnic then.

Johnny,
I must make a correction.  It is not a "super" decoder ring, it is a "secret" decoder ring, which is why you should never mention it on a public forum.  Now I have to change all the codes.  I hope your BBQ/training goes very well.  Aloha!

Aloha, Johnny:

I just took a job as a philosophy prof at Westminster College in Fulton, MO, which appears to be about a six hour drive from you (thus speaks MapQuest).  I won't make the move until July, but please keep me posted on seminars, since I would love to have the opportunity to come and train with you guys.

Johnny:

I believe Westminster started as a seminary back in the 1800's, though it is now a liberal arts college (it still remains loosely affiliated with the Presbyterian Church).  I'll be working in the Department of Classics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies as an Assistant Professor of Asian Philosophy and Religions.  From what I've been told, many of the religion majors go on to seminary or to get a doctorate in theology after graduating.  Though I specialize in Asian thought, I actually do a lot of work on Christian philosophy of religion (one of the chapters of my dissertation was on Kierkegaard).

When I first read your statement, "I'm going to get a BJJ black belt out here on that day," I thought it meant that you were going to earn your black belt on that day.Confused   Who are you thinking of bringing out?

Looking forward to the crunchy corn! Very Happy

De La Riva is really cool and so is monteiro.

Jim are aware of Ravi Zacharias?

He puts philosophical thought on three level.

One is Academic:  Books and discussions on Nietche, Kiekergarrd and other peoples names I can't spell.

Level two is media centereed:  Music, magazines and books that the people of the day consume but have an effect on the culture.  For example Time Magazine, Back Street Boys, Joel Olsteen.

Level three:  friends and family discussing life around the dinner table.

Anyway the reason I brought all that up is that I am interested in level two philosophy.  Right now I am heavily interested in Douglas Adams and C.S. Lewis.  Both made huge impacts (in England mostly) on society, both were very intelligent, and one was an athiest the other a Christian.

I want to visit England so I can learn more about them.

Anyway I think Adam's Hitchhikers is genius and Lewis apologetic works profound.

Johnny:

Where is Marcello's academy?  I checked out his website, but didn't see an address for his school.

Even within academic philosophy, a lot of emphasis is placed upon Zacharias' levels 2 and 3.  Many philosophy departments will offer classes on philosophy in literature and film, and philosophy in popular culture has become a more common subject of study.  The "Socrates' Cafe" and "Philosophy for Children" programs encourage discussion about philosophical topics among non-academics.  In my own experience, it seems that most people are interested in philosophy, but few want to slog through academic texts.  I believe literature, music, film, and informal discussion groups are one of the best ways to actually do philosophy and get spread one's philosophical work to a large audience (the same goes for religious inquiry).

I concur with your praise of Lewis and Adams: everyone should read their books (perhaps we could persuade Burton to make it JKDU policy Smile ).
