Yesterday, JKDU Instructor Molly Helsel won the advanced women's no-gi division at the prestigious Best of the West submission grappling tournament in L.A., both in her weight class and in the open-weight division.  The most dangerous woman in Hawaii is apparently now the most dangerous woman on the west coast.  Congratulations, Molly!  Once again, you have made us all very proud.

So true!!
Thanks for posting that Jim.  Molly's first fight was against a girl with an outstanding guard.  Molly took her down, couldn't pass, but won.  Molly said that she felt tentative in the first match.
Second match against a Pan Am champion.  Molly got to her back and choked her for the tap, giving Molly the championship.
Absolute division, first fight against a 160 pound girl with skills.  Molly didn't want to fight for the takedown, so she pulled guard, went for the armbar, the girl pulled out, Molly went to triangle.  The girl fought it, Molly switched to armbar, got the tap.  (The ref stepped in too as it was fully extended.)
Championship fight for Absolute, Molly went against the girl with the great guard who she fought first.  Molly gave her the triangle and used it to pass.  She got to knee mount, then to the back, then finished the choke.
Four fights, three subs, two championships.  Pretty good for not even training for the event!  Good for you Molly.  As Jim said, we are all very proud of you.  Aloha!

Hey guys!  Thanks for the love...  Sorry it took me so long to give it back - I have limited access to the computer these days.  I miss everyone ALOT and I wish you could have been there this last weekend with me.  But i know you are there in spirit.

Well the tourney was pretty exciting!  Easily as big as NAGA in Hawaii.  There were LOTS of girls.  The girls I went against were pretty good.  I planned on entering the men's division again if no one showed up.  One of the other girls at my new school who has only been training graound for about 9 months too the Beginers division.  She did great!  Almost broke one girls arm.  We have been working alot together so needless to say I was very proud of her.

The training here is really good.  I was worried that I would not be able to have such a great group as we had back in Hawaii.  Lucky for me I found a good team and a good coach - and if it couldn;t be you guys it's the next best thing.

I am taking everything you all taught me and taking it to the next level.  Gone but NEVER forgotten!  I miss all ya'll!  I changed my e-mail - so feel free to shoot me one over if you want (it gets lonely out here sometimes) - maulinator001@hotmail.com.  I'll keep you posted for anything else exciting that comes up!

Aloha Nui Loa, Molly

I just taught her how to gouge, bite, and fish-hook, so I can't take any credit.  I hear she used actual technique to win (must have been something either Burton or Jake showed her)! Very Happy
