What are your opinions on the quality of the "official" Kali/Escrima headgear:

http://www.iisports.com/product.asp?dept_id=2302&pf_id=PS4003A

In my full-contact Kali days, we always used fencing masks, but this looks a lot better.  I seem to vaguely remember Burton or Creighton having something similar to this.  If anyone has any experience with this headgear, please let me know the following:

(1) Is it comfortable?  Does it stay on your head during sparring (including grappling)?
(2) Does it offer good protection for all areas of the head, including the throat?
(3) How does it hold up (better than dipped foam, I hope)?
(4) Is it worth the price (about $100)?  Do you know a good (i.e. cheap and reliable) place to buy a set?
(5) Can you punch it with a MMA-glove without removing the skin from you knuckles (one of the many reasons I no longer use a metal face cage in sparring)?
(6) When wearing the headgear, will I look as buff as the mannequin in the picture (looks like the Century B.O.B. bag)? Very Happy

Many thanks in advance!

Those headgear are very good, because you can take a full power hit to the face with a substantial rattan stick and not incur injury.  They are heavy, but can be used for grappling.  The throat is protected, but an upward thrust will get under the flap.  I have four of them if you want to try one on and play with it before you order.  Let me know and I'll bring a pair to the Kali class.  Aloha!

Burton: Thanks for the info.  I'll be in class Thursday and would love to take a look at one then.  Perhaps I can wear it and let Creighton beat me with one of those rattan telephone-poles that he claims are kali sticks.  Very Happy

Reggie: Thanks for the link!  It's good to have options, and this set looks promising.

That looks interesting Reggie.
I'll bring the headgear on Thursday.  If you can, please come in early, as Charuto is coming about 8.  Unfortunately, Creighton has to take care of some unexpected family situation on the Big Island, and will have to miss testing with Charuto.  We'll do a make up test when Creighton gets back.  Aloha!
