A few weeks ago I had Renato "Charuto" Verissimo (stand-out Nova Uniao blackbelt, UFC competitor, BJ Penn's coach) visit our school to evaluate our students in no-gi BJJ.  He was very impressed.  He came back last night to finish the evaluation and award rank to the students who took place.   I am very pleased to announce that we have 11 blue belts and 3 purple belts.  This is especially pleasing due to the fact that Charuto and Nova Uniao, which is one of the top competitive teams in Brazil, have extremely high standards.  The Blue Belts are:

Cindy Watanabe
Liz Ishihara
Sarah Badat-Richardson
Ryan Scoville
Nolan Wong
Brad Lewandowski
Guillaume Maman
Jarlo Ilano
Clayton Cheung
Molly Helsel
Walker Langley

The Purple Belts are:

Shelton Yamashiro
Jim McRae
Scott Isihara

I want to congratulate each on their success, but as Charuto advised last  night, "The certificate is just a recognition of your progress.  Look at it for five minutes, then throw it away and get back to training."    Aloha!

That's wonderful Burt.  It's good to see more people getting ranked in no-gi.  I was under the impression for a long time that you only got rank while doing gi-style jits.  I guess no gi ranking is happening more often now?

Awesome job and congrats to all the new belt holders!

Congratulations to all who participated and to those who ranked! BJJ has some of the highest standards for ranking in most of the martial arts community.   When you belt in BJJ its not because you put the time in, but because you achieved and displayed a degree of excellence.

WOW, their teacher must be pretty good too!  Way to go Burton.

Everyone at JKDU Hawaii gives a big mahalo to Charuto for taking the time to train and evaluate us and to Burton for giving us the skills we needed to pass our tests (hopefully without embarassing him too much!).

Mahalo nui loa!

I had joked with everyone that after Charuto rolled with each person, he decided to create a new belt that is below white. Razz
Truthfully, the grapplling skill displayed by each student was very impressive.  What can I say?  I am very proud, not only for the skills, but also for the great attitude that everyone in our classes display.   Aloha!

What distinguishes a blue belt from a purple belt? What was he looking for during their evaluation?

Tank21 (Rich), the difference between a blue and a purple is that a purple has a wider range of techniques that he or she is applying, along with a greater ability to control the opponent's body and defend against their attacks.  It is not about specific techniques, but about the abilty to impose their "game" to a greater degree.  For example, Jim McRae, Shelton Yamashiro, and Scott Ishihara all have very different approaches, yet in the end, all are extremely capable on the ground.

"a purple has a wider range of techniques that he or she is applying"

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Although I will admit I did three armbars last year, perhaps this year I will attempt a triangle. My only goal in Jits is to get Guillaume to purple without him killing someone. Very Happy

Seriously, congrats to everybody. I've watched everyone progress by leaps and bounds over the years. Burt has always shared everything he learns from his worldclass training partners.
