Burton, is there going to be a "certification" for the MMA for LEO program?  Most of the training programs currently available to the LEO's I am currently helping is limited in their reality effectiveness.  A Deputy Sheriff of mine recently had a situation where someone tried to cut him with a linoleum knife and he was able to handle the situation due to JKDU training.

Hi Ken,
I am very glad to hear that your officer was able to handle the knife.  The MMA For LEOs program is a certification program, only available to LEOs and Defensive Tactics Trainers.  (Such as yourself.)  I am working on this now, and enlisting the help of officers.  (One who is very prominent.)  I am working on the workbook, which is tricky because it not only deals with training, but also officer liability.  I am confident that it will be the very best program available.
Can you send a testimonial from the officer about the knife incident?  I need as much officer support as possible.  Thanks.

Burt, you may want to check the PPCT program (which I certified in last year, but I feel is lacking) for some legal guidence.  Being acceptable in the courts was an emphasis with the PPCT program.

Yes, most important.  Can't have our guys doing things that get them in trouble.

Will this be a program that, we, JKDU representatives, instructors or performance group leaders, can get hold on?

Yes Luis.  JKDU instructors will be qualified to take the course.  We just want to keep it out of the hands of the wrong people so that the Law Enforcement Officers will have an edge over the bad guys.

First & foremost, I would like to thank Mr. Ken Eberle for the training he has shared with me.  I have worked for the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office for seven years & have a black belt in Tang Soo Do.  I have been training with Mr. Eberle for about two years.  The concept of "WIN" whatever is necessary is not just a statment that Mr. Eberle says, it is something we apply in every training.  The other day while serving a warrant, a male subject was standing by a work bench.  As I approached him to check his indentity, he picked up a linoleum knife and started to turn towards me.  I quickly disarmed him & placed him into custody with a minimum amount of force due to my JKD training with Mr. Eberle.  I have trained with other instructors in the past & his training is the most reality based I have encountered yet.

Fantastic.  That is why we train the way we do- because I assume that a few of our students will eventually be in a bad situation.  If we trained all sorts of techniques that didn't really work, allegedly for fun, it would not be fun at all if one of our people got hurt badly in a real situation.  Thanks Ken for representing JKDU so well.

RangerDave,

I loved hearing your account of facing a serious weapon and coming out on top!!!  It is also a credit to Ken that his training combined with your warrior spirit helped you WIN.  Keep kickin ass, brother, and check your six.

Wow.  A lot of missed opportunities.  He is lucky he was not injured more severely or worse.  JKDU training would have definitely helped.

Thanks for the video!  That is the type of guy we are training to beat.  Pepper spray, a bullet, and clubbing with the gun won't stop him.  That is the guy you have to subdue with simple, effective moves that have been trained well.  A well placed choke is the only thing that would stop him.  Thanks again.

Just wow - that officer is lucky to be alive.  No doubt that some empty handed techniques could have helped.  So too could have an "intermediate" force weapon like a baton.

Once it escalated to potentially lethal force[1], it appears that his firearms training failed too.  It looks like he didn't have a BUG either. He should have been able to clear the FTF or stove pipe that probably occurred from something (hand, clothing, etc.) rubbing on the slide and continue firing.  Gabe Suarez teaches that in a CQB situation you should be "generous" with the contents of your magazine and work from way from the belly up to the "brain pan".

[1] - I'd like to hear the LEOs on this forum perspective on if this was a justified escalation of force.  To me, if a guy with a 100+ lbs. weight advantage is beating you down, that this would constitute a sufficient disparity of force to justify the escalation...
