Fight Choreography

FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY FOR FILM

  • The Man in the Iron Mask ……Stunts and choreography
  • Kickboxer 5 (fight choreographer)
  • One Percent full (fight choreographer, director, screenwriter, lead actor)- This movie won the award for best fight choreography at the ACTION ON FILM International Film Festival in Los Angeles- 2009. The movie was also nominated for best action sequence.

I have done the fight choreography on a number of Hollywood films, traveling from Hollywood to various locations across the U.S. and the world. Developing a good fight for a film goes far beyond technical knowledge of the martial arts. It also takes technical knowledge of the camera. It takes an ability to work with actors and stunt people alike to gear the fight to highlight their greatest attributes. An exceptional fight scene should also relate well to the story structure, especially if there are fights throughout the film. Each combat scene should have a story arc just as a dramatic scene has a beginning, middle and end. The sequence of combat scenes throughout the film should arc along with the development of the characters to help tell the story. Action is good, but to make an action scene with relevance to the story line enhances the film tremendously.I also believe in massive amounts of preparation. Each fight scene is written out during pre-production and rehearsed with the actors when possible. If the actors aren’t available for rehearsal, the scenes are rehearsed with my staff in order to get the fights up on their feet. I tweak the fights to make them as good as they can be before we get on the set. Once on set, we have a solid scene that can be further adjusted on the day in order to account for the environment and the input of the director and actors. It takes a lot more work to do all this preparation, but when the day comes to shoot everything goes much smoother and there are no regrets due to lack of preparation.
