Training martial arts with a partner is absolutely essential to enhance your functional fighting skills. But the sad truth is that we have very limited time with a partner. Even professional combat athletes only get a few hours per day with a human being. Most of us get far fewer hours. This means that if you want to be your very best, you must optimize your solo training.
We can train solo in the air or on equipment. For most, equipment training means working on a heavy bag or a Bob bag. While these are excellent practice tools, they are inherently limited. The wooden dummy offers many options that a heavy bag cannot. But to gain the most benefits, you must know how to utilize its characteristics to the fullest.
I have coached fighters at all levels of MMA, from amateur matches in local MMA competitions to UFC main events. In every Mixed Martial Arts gym, you will find heavy bags, but there is a piece of equipment that you almost never see in a professional fighter’s gym: the wooden dummy. Whether you call it a Wing Chun dummy, mook jong, or wooden man dummy, the benefits of working on the dummy are substantial.
So why aren’t they in every MMA gym?
The unfortunate reason we don’t find a Wooden Dummy in MMA gyms is that most people who use it only go through traditional forms on the wooden dummy (be they from Wing Chun Kung Fu or the “JKD Dummy sets”). And those sets look nothing like MMA fighting. We know that there are a lot of very valuable movements in those traditional sets, but most combat sports athletes won’t see that. From a kickboxing or MMA perspective, it is understandable that fighters and coaches would shun dummy training. And that’s a shame.
What happens if we use our JKD mindset and go beyond the traditional methods? What if we reimagine how we can use the Wooden Dummy to enhance our kickboxing or MMA based fighting skills in this modern era? That is exactly what my JKD Wooden Dummy program is about.
My primary focus is always to develop functional fighting skills. There are many other wonderful benefits that we can gain from martial arts training, but I believe that first and foremost, we must learn how to fight well. The worst possible outcome for a seasoned martial artist is to get into an actual self-defense situation and find out that he or she wasn’t prepared to deal with real world violence. So I emphasize practical fight training, For The Street, before going into other life benefits.
Why JKD Wing Chun Dummy and not Muay Thai or Mixed Martial Arts Wooden dummy? Because JKD includes both trapping hands training and street specific techniques.
What’s in the JKD For The Street Wooden Dummy program?
My JKD For Street Self Defense Wooden Dummy program begins with several sections on important principles to help you use the Wooden Dummy specifically for practical skill development. Bruce Lee was all about optimizing skill development and that is what this program provides. The great majority of the techniques and strategies I show are directly from Bruce Lee and his Jun Fan JKD approach to fighting and training.
After the vital principles, we go into specific Jun Fan JKD techniques including the kicks, boxing hand strikes, and the non-boxing hand strikes. I do several sections isolating ranges, or range transitions. These seven areas are extremely important to develop the ability to dominate a skillful opponent. Bruce Lee advocated out-thinking and out-maneuvering an opponent. These areas show how to employ both of those strategies at the same time.
I then go deep into functional JKD hand trapping, (most gleaned from Wing Chun) both from unmatched and matched leads. If you only know how to trap from match leads, yet you utilize Bruce Lee’s JKD Strong side forward theory, you will have a hard time trapping someone who is in the opposite lead. Both approaches are covered in depth.
I also cover using the dummy to practice the all important self-defense scenarios. Most actual attacks don’t happen in a squared off ready position as in combat sports matches. We need to practice well to deal with scenarios, including weapons defenses and I will show you how to do that in this JKD For The Street Wooden Dummy program.
Last, I go into the flow and coordination drills that develop important attributes. This is where I start with particular drills and flows to ensure that you can flow smoothly in combination on the dummy. I give ideas on how to combine everything so you can find your own way. That is the ultimate JKD experience.
I am confident that this program will help you to better train on the Wing Chun Dummy and make great gains in your abilities. Whether you train Original JKD, JKD Concepts, Wing Chun, or any other striking art, the JKD For The Street Wooden Dummy can help you to be your very best!
